Before & After: A Case Study

Before & After: A Case Study

Family Room/Breakfast area

BEFORE, the walls and the fireplace in this family room/breakfast area were a very dark brick color, the same brick used in the outside walls in the backyard of the house.

My idea was to light up the space, and to find the right fireplace mantel  for the room. The most difficult task was to find the right honed white marble with minor shades of gray. I carefully selected limestone in a charcoal color for the fireplace mantel to make it stand out. This was also customized to fit in the space.

In addition, BEFORE, the floor was also a dark brick color. AFTER, wood floors were installed to soften the space and add warmth. A tall window treatment was added to frame the view of the spectacular lake behind the house.

AFTER,  I accomplished my goal with the wall cladding in honed white marble with very small shades of gray to complement the charcoal limestone fireplace mantel. I love the contrast between the wall cladding and the fireplace. The space is bright, and I created the focal point I was looking for, as well as added warmth to the space.

BEFORE, the breakfast area was not defined,  and my idea was to make it noticeable and usable.

AFTER, I transformed the space by adding a pendant light and a round rug to complement the round table for six.  I also added a custom window treatment to add elegance and to tie the rest of the family room together. I created a small sitting area against  the back of the sofa. It allowed guests to have conversations with people gathered around breakfast table. The result: All of these changes  combined made the space more inviting, relaxing, functional and beautiful for entertaining family and friends.
